Why Bother with a Dementia Diagnosis?

DIAGNOSIS VIDEO:

Why get a diagnosis if Alzheimer's can't be cured? Watch England's Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt explain some reasons why it's worth the trouble and can make all the difference in the world.

If a person doesn't get a diagnosis, no one can help. With a good diagnosis, there is so much to do.

  1. Diabetes can't be CURED - but with treatments, medications, it's impact can be somewhat mitigated, slowed down - ditto Alzheimer's FIGHT IT WITH EVERY OPTION YOU HAVE - DON'T GIVE IN TO ALZHEIMER'S - NEVER!

    1. James Hamon,
I was diagnosed by a neurologist (whose mother had Alz. ) in July, 2009 with Alzheimer’s. I was told to try Aricept but after weeks of bad diarrhea I stopped taking it. I had already decided that I was going to do whatever I could to slow down the progress of my Alzheimer’s..

I will be 84 this July which also marks the 8th anniversary (?) of my Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

My balance has worsened in the past few months as well as my short term memory. I also have trouble remembering various words and the names of things. However, I can still carry on ville, a decent conversation and many of my friends and relatives still doubt that I have Alz. Even my regular doctor doesn’t understand how I can pass the biannual test he gives me. But my wife knows, since she is the one who has to put with all the many notes I have tapped on cabinet doors as well helping me find the words I lose.

I tell this to as many people as I can in the hope that those who may be in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, or know some one who is, will try what I have been doing. It may not work for everyone but it may work for some. And starting in the early stages means an early diagnosis.

  2. Too many families just won't accept a loved one has this which is why they just won't push for a diagnosise. We must teach them that being diagnosed is the start of some wonderful help and medication out there. This help can transform their lives and the families. Some of the happiest people I know have dementia and they are living a happy and fulfilled life due to the care and support/meds that is available. Its hard but the families must push for more help if they suspect a loved one has this cruel disease.

  3. I was a care giver of my husband. Early detection and the right medicine can make a difference. It would be hard to believe that anyone past the 2nd stage could be living a happy fulfilled life with this devastating disease. With my husband less meds made a huge difference in his quality of life. Remember see the person not the disease...look for moments of joy each day. Sometimes you are asked to wait but a smile can be such a blessing while living with AD.

  4. Just to add Alzheimer's tries to take the loved one and the care giver...please don't let it be the winner all the time. For the care giver put your name on the to do list your important also. One day at a time..don't sweat the small things and simplify everything. Short sentences, staying calm and redirecting a tough situation really helps. Bless

  5. Absolute rubbish! he sites Cancer research as a n example of helping to eradicate. What he does not say is that Cncer research receives much, much more funding in comparison to alzheimer's.I was diagnosed with early onset 5years ago.Current medicin available is just tokenism. In the long term it is useless.
I wish Politicians would get real, stop posturing for popularity and do something really positive.
