They were camping out for a cure in Castleton !

24-Hour News 8 stopped by to find out more about their mission - to raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease.

News 8: Overnight, about 50 people camped out at the Regency Place of Castleton. Their goal - to raise awareness - and money - for the Alzheimer's Association.

James Wahls: "73,000 people drive by my facility every day. I want them to know about us, and I also want them to know about the Alzheimer's Association.

Camping Out For A Cure
Doctors employ a number of strategies to diagnose dementia.

News 8: This was the second year for the weekend campout. It kicked off out with Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard proclaiming June 13th as the city's official camp-out date.

James: I think that for the city to be aware of it and to do something for a disease that is pretty much under-spoken about is phenomenol.

News 8: Jennifer Arnett is a nurse at Regency Place, where 50% of the residents have Alzheimer's.

Jennifer: "At times it can be very difficult, mostly for the family members. That's often what we see. Five million people nationwide are affected with Alzheimer's."

News 8: Regency Place of Castleton is just one of over a hundred facilities across the nation participating in the event. And they have already met their goal of raising $10,000.

John Moore: When you have family members come up to you and tell you they appreciate it, when you have other co-workers telling you they had a great time sitting around the campfire telling ghost stories or just talking with each other outside the work setting, it's really good.

News 8: The event has been so successful, planners are already looking forward to next year.

James: This has gotten SO BIG in just one year that it is something we are going to be doing from now on.

News 8: Adam Prickel, 24-Hour, News 8.
